Seeders’ Cup III | Week 14 Picks

Playoff Scenarios | Additional Score Potential

In The Seeders’ Cup, correct picks may award Seed Points, or “additional scoring,” if the team earns a playoff spot. The additional scores by playoff seeding are:

Clinch playoff berth (wildcard) = 2 points.
Clinch division title = 3 points.
Clinch a first-round bye in the playoffs = 4 points.
Clinch home field advantage in playoffs = 5 points.

Current playoff standings and playoff scenarios can be found online courtesy of CBS Sports.

The following teams have a chance to earn Seeder Points with a win:

New England = 3 or 4
Oakland = 2
Cowboys = 3, 4, or 5
Seattle = 3

That is four options for up to 14 points.

See the CBS scenarios to see which other teams must lose or tie for the above teams to secure playoff seeding.

Chiefs win… Wise Orangutan moves into scoring range, but needs at least one more correct pick. Five Analysts struggle to the move the ball in the first quarter (1 Incorrect Pick), but they can score a Field Goal (2 Correct Picks) and Additional Points with the Cowboys, Patriots, or Seahawks on Sunday. Two Analysts are playing a late game and have time to script the first three Picks of their game!

Analysts will submit the remaining picks on Saturday.

Sunday Game Day Picks Are In:

The Bookie: Ravens/Cowboys/Lions (Touchdown possible)
Big Tuna: Raiders/Cowboys/Patriots (Field Goal possible)
Little Tuna: Cowboys/Raiders/Seahawks (Field Goal possible)
Wise Orangutan: Chiefs/Seahawks/Lions (Touchdown possible)
The Strategist: Raiders/Lions/Vikings (Field Goal possible)
Kal Krome: Seahawks/Raiders/Giants (Field Goal possible)
B-Reezy: Lions/Raiders/Patriots (Field Goal possible)
Atwork: Vikings/Lions/Cowboys (Touchdown possible)

Race Day Notes

For the next 8 weeks The Bookie will ask an Analyst to reflect on your strategies and how they are working.

Our fourth muse will be from Kal Krome

Kal Krome: “Do you really want to take a Thursday game? That’s what I ask myself but the way I see it when I take a Thursday game and lose at least on Sunday I’m not worried about the scores and can do my chores and feed the horses while the sun is up.”

The Bookie: “Well, not this time Kal. New rules for the analyst that took the Raiders and lost. Each week will be a quarter of a football game. So this week is just the first quarter. You can still score a Field Goal with 2 correct picks!! There’s three more quarters left in this game. You’ll be watching football all day Sunday. The fat lady hasn’t sung yet!!”

Sunday Early Game Day Pick Results:

The Bookie: Ravens/Cowboys/Lions (Touchdown possible)
Big Tuna: Raiders/Cowboys/Patriots (Field Goal possible)
Little Tuna: Cowboys/Raiders/Seahawks (Field Goal possible)
Wise Orangutan: Chiefs/Seahawks/Lions (At least a Field Goal, 3 Points)
The Strategist: Raiders/Lions/Vikings (Field Goal, 3 Points)
Kal Krome: Seahawks/Raiders/Giants (Field Goal possible)
B-Reezy: Lions/Raiders/Patriots (Field Goal possible)
Atwork: Vikings/Lions/Cowboys (At least a Field Goal, 3 Points)

The Strategist drives for a Field Goal (3 points) with the Vikings and Lions wins, Atwork and Wise Orangutan are in Field Goal range, with their drives for Touchdowns still possible.

With the Dolphins win over the Cardinals, the Patriots will not earn additional scores. The Seahawks can now clinch their division for three additional points with a win.

With the Lions win, the Cowboys can no longer clinch a first-round bye, so they also are worth three additional points with a win.

Sunday SNF Pick Scenarios:

The Bookie: Ravens/Cowboys/Lions (Touchdown possible)
Big Tuna: Raiders/Cowboys/Patriots (Field Goal possible)
Little Tuna: Cowboys/Raiders/Seahawks
Wise Orangutan: Chiefs/Seahawks/Lions (Field Goal, 3 Points)
The Strategist: Raiders/Lions/Vikings (Field Goal, 3 Points)
Kal Krome: Seahawks/Raiders/Giants
B-Reezy: Lions/Raiders/Patriots (Field Goal possible)
Atwork: Vikings/Lions/Cowboys (At least a Field Goal, 3 Points)

After the Seahawks’ drubbing in Green Bay, Little Tuna and Kal Krome will have a scoreless first quarter as they both make two Incorrect Picks (InPs!).

Earlier in the day, The Strategist drove for a Field Goal (3 points) with the Vikings and Lions wins. Wise Orangutan’s drive stalls as the Packers sink the Hawks, so he also settles for a Field Goal (3 points).

Tonight, three Analysts pick the Cowboys to beat the Giants.

Big Tuna needs the Cowboys to win in order to get his first quarter drive going. The Bookie can move into position for a Field Goal and a second Field Goal (additional score from Cowboys division title) if the Cowboys beat the Giants.

Atwork, however, currently has the highest powered offense in the first quarter. A win by the Cowboys will net him a Touchdown drive (6 points), a two-point conversion (Vikings Win and Pick), and a Field Goal off a turnover (additional score for Cowboys division title) for a total of 11 points in the first quarter.

Kal Krome: Seahawks/Raiders/Giants (Drive Fails, 0 Points)
B-Reezy: Lions/Raiders/Patriots (Field Goal possible)
Atwork: Vikings/Lions/Cowboys (Field Goal, 3 Points)

Atwork settles for a Field Goal and The Bookie’s drive stalls in Field Goal territory.

The Bookie and B-Reezy line up for a field goal kick tomorrow night, but only one can be true!

Seeders Cup III | Slate of Games

The Playoff-Caliber Game

This year, The Seeders’ Cup will follow the Game of the Year Edition of the Rules in which the four week Pick Three competition will simulate a football game. Each week will be one quarter of a Playoff-Caliber Game and the Pick Threes will be regarded as offensive drives for Field Goals or Touchdowns. Review the revised point system here.

The Entrants

The Analysts have selected their Home Teams to start the third annual Seeders’ Cup. The entrants are:

Seeders Cup III | Slate of Analysts and Home Teams
Slate of Analysts and Home Teams for Seeders Cup III (2016-17)

Slate of Games

Seeders Cup III | Slate of Games
Slate of Games for the Seeders Cup III (2016-17)

The slate of games for The Seeders’ Cup III (GOTY Playoff-Caliber Game) will test the playoff-worthiness of the Analysts as the Home Teams and their opponents compete for playoff seeding.

We have three head-to-head clashes between the Analysts’ Home Teams in the first three quarters of the GOTY Playoff -Caliber Game : division rivals Raiders v. Chiefs (in the first quarter), division rivals Rams v. Seahawks (in the second quarter), and a clash of current division leaders for home field advantage, Lions v. Cowboys (in Quarter 3).

There also appear to be a few un-owned teams currently competing for playoff seeds: Patriots, Falcons, Packers, and Giants in Q1; Giants, Colts, Eagles, Buccaneers, and Titans in Q2; Packers, Colts, Steelers, and Broncos in Q3; and Eagles, Packers, and Broncos in Q4. These un-owned teams, or others as the season plays out, may be worth “seed” scores to the Analysts.

Home teams owned by an Analyst are in bold. The team at the left is the visiting team; the team at the right is the host (playing at home). There are a half dozen or more featured games, including two Thursday night games, two Sunday night games of the week (subject change), four Saturday games, and two Monday night games.

Picks

Reminder: Every Analyst has a bias for his or her Home Team and may not pick the sponsored team to lose. Analysts do not have to pick his or her Home Team to win a trifecta or to earn the “extra point” on a touchdown.

Two Correct Picks scores a Field Goal worth 3 points. Three Correct Points scores a Touchdown worth 6 points and extra points on the conversion: 1-point for a Home Team win and 2-points for a Home Team win in the Correct Pick Three.

Additional points are scored for picking teams that earn spots in the playoffs during the week. These points are regarded as special teams or defensive scores and are earned if the Analyst scores a Field Goal (2 Correct Picks) or Touchdown (3 Correct Picks) in the same wek. They are not awarded if the Analyst has only 1 Correct Pick during the week as if the offense failed to score after a great special teams play or defensive takeaway.

Email three picks to The Bookie before each leg (week) of the Race. The first picks are due Thursday, December 8, before TNF.

Rules Review | Analysts’ Strategies

The Clearinghouse

The Clearinghouse remains surprised by the influence of the Analysts on the outcome of the league.

In the beginning, Big Tuna, aka “PC,” showed the accountants how a “pick three” could be more complicated than simply picking three winners. The PC-Fecta Derby carries his name, but the Player Haters Preakness also comes from his pick strategy in the first race of the first year before the four “Crown” races existed in their current form.

We tried to make the individual Crown races the featured races of the year, but retired-Analyst, Minds Blank, elevated the stature of the Analyst of the Year Award with her superlative trash talking. The trophy races only become more prestigious after Little Tuna — who had the worst regular season of any Analyst in Season I — rode the hated New Englanders to the pinnacle of sports analysis, The Super Trifecta Bowl.

The following season, Little Tuna then showed the rest of the Analysts what it takes to ride a front-running Home Team over the course of the regular season to secure the Analyst of the Year. Her romp last year, we at The Clearinghouse freely admit amongst ourselves, worried us. Although the annual competition came down to the wire with The Strategist and her unpredictable Fishe-rams that only she could predict, after the season concluded, we wondered if the Analysts might game the Rules by riding front-runners out of the gates?

Then along comes B-Reezy to shift the strategy again this year. He has the absolute worst team in our league (if not all of professional football) and, yet, he will likely secure the Analyst of the Year Award by the 15th week of the season, if not next week. Taking a long-stride with little regard for the Crown races, B-Reezy explained in Week 5:

My strategy is different from last year where I made a lot of my picks with my home team. I’m still a number 1 Bears fan but “Straight out, my strategy is, when I feel pretty sure I go for the trifecta. I’m going for the big one, Analysts of the Year Award. I HAVE MY EYE ON THE PRIZE!!! ”

Next year, Analysts will have at least four different and proven strategies available to start the season: Big Tuna’s Crown team sprints, The Strategist’s perennial and inscrutable 8-8 team, Little Tuna’s front-runner team, and now B-Reezy’s steady trot to the finish line in the saddle of an un-bear-able team.

Anyway, this silly little competition remains far more interesting than we anticipated when negotiating terms of service with The Bookie three years ago. Just sayin’….

So, now, The Clearinghouse has another challenge for the Analysts… [more to come]

The Bookie

“If picking three correct teams is too easy we will just figure out a way to make it harder.”

Famous words from 3 years ago. Just sayin’…

The Seeders’ Cup III Preparations

New Home Team Selection Order

Three races into the season and five Analysts have Home Teams that appear to be headed to the pasture during the playoffs. A few are grumbling about swaps, and the proven Home Team champions in New England are available for an upscale….

According to the rules, the order of selection for new Home Teams is by current playoff seeding, worst to first.

The order of picks will be:

1. B-Reezy (15th NFC)
2. The Strategist (13th NFC)
3. Wise Orangutan (12th AFC)
4. Atwork (9th NFC)
5. The Bookie (7th AFC)
6. Kal Krome (2nd NFC)
7. Big Tuna (1st AFC, 10-2 Home Team record)
8. Little Tuna (1st AFC, 11-1 Home Team record)

Make your decision by the end of Monday Night Football by sending a private email to The Bookie if you wish to release your current Home Team….

Releases and New Home Team Selections

B-Reezy, Wise Orangutan, and The Bookie release their couch-bound ponies as the regular season draws to a close.

The Strategist gives her Home Team a contract extension and Atwork orders his men to row harder! The Tunas and Kal Krome like the view from the top and keep their Home Teams as well.

The three new Home Teams are:

  1. With the first pick. B-Reezy keeps it in the division and selects Detroit.
  2. With the second pick, Wise Orangutan keeps it in the division and selects Kansas City.
  3. With the third pick, The Bookie flies to Baltimore, two-time playoff winner over New England in the past 10 years.

The Clearinghouse will release the Slate of Games for the Seeders’ Cup tomorrow evening. First picks are due Thursday afternoon as Oakland travels to Kansas City for Thursday Night Football!

Analyst of the Year III

Heading into the homestretch of the annual race, B-Reezy leads comfortably after picking up his fourth trifecta in five weeks. With 7 Trifectas and 29 Correct Picks, he can lock up the most prestigious award in sports analysis in the fourteenth week of the season!

The rest of the field is playing for the honor of a mention in The Winners’ Circle.

Big Tuna holds onto second with 3 Trifectas and 26 Correct Picks, followed closely by Wise Orangutan (3 Trifectas and 24 Correct Picks) and Atwork (3 Trifectas and 23 Correct Picks).

Kal Krome narrowly holds onto fifth with 2 Trifecta Points and 24 Correct Picks with  The Bookie (2 Trifecta Points and 23 Correct Picks) and Little Tuna (2 Trifecta Points and 22 Correct Picks)  trailing by a 1 and 2 heads, respectively.

The Strategist’s Home Team, if not the Analyst herself, seems to be ready for the pasture this year (1 Trifecta and 20 Correct Picks).

The Test of the Computations reveals a first-time winner!

B-Reezy romps to an easy victory after earning four trifectas in five weeks, including the last three legs of the Fibonacci Stakes. His 14 points bests his next closest contender by 7 points. The second-year Analyst breaks maiden* in the WFTL!

Little Tuna (7 points) dusts off her Analyst of the Year trophy and regains her form from last season to spring into second place down the homestretch. The Bookie (5 points) edges out Atwork (5 points) with her solid tiebreaker resume.

In fifth, Big Tuna (4 points) bests Wise Orangutan by a length (3 points).

At the back, Kal Krome Atwork takes seventh over The Strategist.

The Analysts picks are in:

The Bookie: Dolphins*/Cowboys/*Patriots
Big Tuna: Cowboys*/Seahawks*/Rams*
Little Tuna: Cowboys*/Seahawks*/Raiders
Wise Orangutan: Chargers*/Seahawks*/Patriots
The Strategist: Rams*/Seahawks/Bears
Kal Krome: Seahawks*/Cowboys*/49ers*
B-Reezy: Cowboys*/Seahawks/Raiders
Atwork: Vikings*/Seahawks*/Bears

Base trifecta is worth 5 points in the final leg of the Fibonacci Stakes.

* Denotes Fibonacci bonus picks (none possible in Leg 1).

Race Day Notes:

For the next 8 weeks I will ask each of you to reflect on your strategies and how they are working.

Our third muse will be from B-Reezy.

B-Reezy: “Hmmm. Each week I witness my lead grow stronger and the taste of near victory becomes more and more sweet, as it becomes evident that I will be crowned Analyst of the Year. An event long prophesied in the annals of fantasy lore. Your attempts at upheaval have been, at best, minuscule and they show to be ever more pathetic as the end draws nigh. Learn your hymn’s of praise for your new master, for they shall soon be warranted.”

The Results Are In!

The Bookie: Dolphins*/Cowboys/*Patriots
Big Tuna: Cowboys*/Seahawks*/Rams*
Little Tuna: Cowboys*/Seahawks*/Raiders (7 points)
Wise Orangutan: Chargers*/Seahawks*/Patriots
The Strategist: Rams*/Seahawks/Bears
Kal Krome: Seahawks*/Cowboys*/49ers*
B-Reezy: Cowboys*/Seahawks/Raiders (6 points)
Atwork: Vikings*/Seahawks*/Bears

Down the homestretch, B-Reezy finishes at a blazing gallop and distances himself from his followers. Little Tuna adeptly trails the frontrunner to notch her first trifecta of the Fibonacci.

The rest of the field stumbles on a bad trip over the unique picks designed to avoid the Box Out by B-Reezy.

** Trip: The course followed by a horse and rider during the running of a race and describes the “trouble” encountered. A horse that had a “good trip” did not encounter any unusual difficulty. A “bad trip” might involve racing wide, or being boxed in by other horses.

Mathematically speaking…

In the end, there was no way for any other Analyst to overtake B-Reezy as he scored a 6-point trifecta to add to his 3 point lead (8 points was the maximum possible in leg 5 of the Fibonacci Stakes).

ROI2 Partners Launches Kickstarter Campaign to Introduce the “World Football Trifecta Leagues” to the Fantasy Football Market

Chicago, Illinois – December 1, 2016 – ROI2 Partners, a company that developed a new template for fantasy sports leagues, announced today the first edition of its rules and league management tools for World Football Trifecta Leagues. The company also announced its crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter with a goal to raise $50,000 and support the start of 1,000+ leagues during the upcoming postseason in professional football.

Using the tagline, “professional football analysis for the horse race enthusiast,” the first edition of the rules for the World Football Trifecta Leagues simulates horse racing. Each league pits six to ten players, called “Analysts,” against each other in weekly “pick three” contests to predict the outcomes of professional football games. The players adopt thoroughbred names and “home teams” that determine the games from which to pick three winners in the week. A league then divides a professional football league’s regular season into four races, dubbed “The Quaternary Crown,” each lasting four to five weeks. The four Crown races utilize different point systems to reward players whose picks are correct, but that also meet the specific race criteria for extra points. The points then translate into “horse lengths” that determine who is the winning analyst.

In addition the Crowns, there are two season-ending competitions to hold players’ interests over the entire season: an Analyst of the Year award for the most accurate prognosticator during the regular season and a postseason World Football Analyst Championship for the most accurate picks in the postseason. Each race is distinct so that players are not eliminated by mid-season and all analyst-players remain engaged in the competitions of sports analysis until season-end.

The company developed and published its fantasy football league rules online during the past three years (see: http://www.roi2partners.com/wftl/). “The standard office and pick ’em pools have not seen the kind of innovation and technological support that player-based fantasy football has witnessed in the past twenty years,” said Joe Wycoff, head of the family-owned business. “The pools, however, have limited appeal because participants are required to study and pick every game in every week of the entire season regardless of their familiarity with football in general or the individual teams.”

To address this barrier to adoption for pick ’em leagues, the home teams of the Analysts determine the games from which players pick winners each week. This is the most significant departure from standard fantasy football leagues in which participants draft players for fantasy teams. Mr. Wycoff added, “We believe there is a segment of the market for fantasy football that wants to get back to watching football games and rooting for home teams rather than reading individual player stats, injury reports and data from predictive models.”

Consequently, ROI2 Partners envisions the first edition of its league rules as a template for additional versions of its concept for fantasy sports leagues. For instance, an international professional football league such as a premier soccer league with thirty-eight matches may be divided into three “grand tour” cycling races among the analyst-players. The company is already developing a “Football Game of the Year” edition of its rules to simulate a professional football game, rather than horse racing. The “Football Game of the Year” edition will be a fantasy game in which the pick-three competitions take place over four weeks of the regular season as if each week is one of four quarters in a football game.

To contribute to the Kickstarter campaign to launch the first edition of its rules and technology for league management, please visit https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1838362977/world-football-trifecta-leagues.

“We hope other families, friends, and coworkers will enjoy a true novelization of the standard office pool pick ’em format for professional football games,” Mr. Wycoff shared. “We have found that the general rules allow hard core and casual professional football fans to gather information for picks in their own way and to adopt different strategies suited to their interests in the select games of the week. In the Winners’ Circle we maintain for our league, eight of nine Analysts have won at least one race in the past two and a half years.”

ROI2 Partners is a family-owned business operating in Chicago, Illinois. The company has developed the World Football Trifecta Leagues over the past three years and manages the distribution of league rules and tools. The rules and information necessary to start new leagues are freely available at http://www.roi2partners.com/wftl/. Scenarios | Fibonacci Stakes III | Leg 5

Fibonacci Stakes Leg 5 Scenarios:

Current Standings

Standings | Fibonacci Stakes III | Leg 4
Standings after Leg 4 of Fibonacci Stakes III

Visitors: Rules for the Fibonacci Stakes can be found in the menu under Quaternary Crown.

In the final calculations of the Fibonacci Stakes, all all but one Analyst (see #7 below) remains in contention for The Winner’s Circle. With 5 base trifecta points and 3 bonus trifecta points at stake in Leg 5, an Analyst can come from behind to win with 8 points and as few as 5 points.

B-Reezy has positioned himself for the homestretch, but needs a trifecta with at least one Fibonacci bonus to cross the finish line unchallenged.

Beware the Box Out! If an Analyst with more points has the same three picks, there is no way to overtake the Analyst in the lead to start the homestretch!

Below are the most likely scenarios for the final leg of the Fibonacci Stakes:

  1. B-Reezy (8 points) shows the lead with three full lengths between him and his closest challengers. He needs only 6 points (one same pick from Leg 4) to put the rest of the field out of reach. He has the weakest Tiebreakers, however, and will lose in every head-to-head tie with the other Analysts.
  2. The Bookie (5 points) has the strongest Tiebreaker portfolio and will beat nearly every other Analyst in a tie (she cannot tie with Little Tuna). She can run for 8 points (same three picks as Leg 4) and race only B-Reezy or Atwork at the finish line. If she runs for 5 points (no Fibonacci bonuses), she could let Wise Orangutan slip past on the outside rail.
  3. Atwork (5 points) has a weak Tiebreaker set, so his best chance is for B-Reezy and The Bookie to falter while picking up a trifecta of 7 points in value. Big Tuna chases one length behind, but the fish has a weaker Tiebreaker set at the moment.
  4. Big Tuna (4 points) is the first of the Analysts who can win only if B-Reezy fails to get a trifecta. In addition, he has a weak Tiebreaker portfolio and may need to put clear distance between himself and the last challengers.
  5. Wise Orangutan (3 points) has a modest Tiebreaker resume and can beat Big Tuna and Atwork at the line. He needs B-Reezy and The Bookie to spit the bit in the homestretch if he hopes to stand in the winners’ circle.
  6. Little Tuna, Kal Krome, and The Strategist (0 points) need all of the above Analysts to fail to Pick Three and then also to Let ‘Em Ride (take the same three teams as last week) in order to win. If one or more end in a tie with B-Reezy, the strength of Tiebreakers as they stand currently comes in this order: Little Tuna, Kal Krome, The Strategist, and B-Reezy.
  7. Three Analysts had both the Cowboys and Vikings last week. Those Analysts have to choose between the two teams or two other teams. That limits their point totals for this week to 7 points — effectively eliminating The Strategist. The Bookie and Atwork, currently contesting second place, are also limited to 7 points this week and 12 points total in the Fibonacci Stakes.

Will B-Reezy’s “good trip” come to a sudden halt or will the wily long-strider claim a Crown with his season-long strategy?!!?

***** SCENARIO UPDATE AFTER PICKS AND TNF *****

  1. The Strategist was eliminated before the homestretch as she could not Let ‘ Em Ride (pick the same three teams) out of the far turn (Leg 4).
  2. B-Reezy boxes out Little Tuna and eliminates her from the Fibonacci Stakes. Both Analysts have the same Picks, so they advance or fall back together.
  3. After another dramatic ending that is ill-measured by the W-L column, Atwork fails to advance on B-Reezy down the homestretch after the Norsemen struggle to plunder the Texas Marshals. He has been eliminated.
  4. Five Analysts remain in contention heading into the early games on Sunday….

***** SUNDAY EARLY GAME SCENARIOS *****

Game of the Day: Bills at Raiders
All of the Analysts not named B-Reezy who picked the Seahawks need the Bills to beat the Raiders. If the Raiders win, B-Reezy boxes out the field with the exception of The Bookie.B-Reezy’s (and Little Tuna’s) homestretch run of course hinges on the Raiders win and/or Seahawks loss. The Bookie right now has the open lane since she did not take the Seahawks, but her Dolphins must beat the Ravens at home.

***** SUNDAY LATE GAME SCENARIOS *****

1. Big Tuna’s and The Strategist’s last ditch Ram-ming down the homestretch is gunned down by the Patriots.
2. The Bookie faces mortality as the Ravens deal a deathblow to the Dolphins in the final push.

Only one Analyst appears to be within Charg(er)-ing distance of the frontrunner B-Reezy. B-Reezy can box out Wise Orangutan with a win by the Raiders, or he can trot across the finish line with a loss by the Chragers or the Seahawks. Wise O. needs a good trip down the homestretch with wins by the Chargers, Bills, and Seahawks if he hopes to close the distance!
***** SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL GAME SCENARIOS *****

B-Reezy continues his sprint to the finish line of the Fibonacci Stakes. The Raiders secured his quote, dominance, unquote, over the league in Year 3 after the Wise Orangutan trips over his Home Team selection from the 1978-79 professional football season (!).

Heading into the SNF, B-Reezy wins with a Seahawks victory or loss, while Little Tuna shows legs and may come from behind to place in the Fibonacci Stakes if the Seahawks win.

All marvel as B-Reezy wins his first Crown!
