Analyst of the Year III

Down the homestretch of the annual race, it is clear that no Analysts will be able to catch B-Reezy for the lead.

With 7 Trifectas and 31 Correct Picks, B-Reezy has locked up the most prestigious award in sports analysis in the fourteenth week of the season! He is chasing history now — to be the first Analyst with 8 or more trifectas in a single season!

The rest of the field is playing for the honor of a mention in The Winners’ Circle. The other seven Analysts still have a chance to have their names recorded as place or show!

Big Tuna holds onto second with 3 Trifectas and 27 Correct Picks, followed closely by Wise Orangutan (3 Trifectas and 26 Correct Picks) and Atwork (3 Trifectas and 25 Correct Picks).

Down by only one length to the Analyst currently in second place, Kal Krome narrowly leads the back of the pack with 2 Trifecta Points and 25 Correct Picks, followed closely by The Bookie (2 Trifecta Points and 24 Correct Picks) and Little Tuna (2 Trifecta Points and 22 Correct Picks).

The stubborn Strategist (1 Trifecta and 22 Correct Picks), who stuck by her Home Team head coach through thick and  thin, may herself be headed for the door if she does not earn a trifecta this week.

Standings | The Seeders’ Cup III | Playoff-Caliber Game Scoring | Quarter 1

The Seeders’ Cup III

The Seeders’ Cup is testing a new trifecta point system that models the score of a football game. See the Slate of Games and the Playoff-Caliber Game Rules for more information.

Playoff-Caliber Game Score | End of First Quarter

A low-scoring first quarter as no Analyst drives for a Touchdown in the week (i.e., correctly picks three winners).

Wise Orangutan and Atwork appeared to be marching for a Touchdown after getting their first two picks correct, but then settled for Field Goals (2 correct picks, 3 points) to end their drives.

The Strategist and B-Reezy struggled to move the ball early when KC defeated their first pick, Oakland, but then moved down the field to score Field Goals (3 points each) at the end of the first quarter.

Four Analyst fail to score in the first quarter, including Little Tuna who did not register one first down (0 correct picks!)

No additional scores were possible as no teams clinched playoff seeding during the week. Heading into the second quarter, it is a three-point game between the Analysts.

Playoff-Caliber Game Tiebreakers

If the Playoff-Caliber Game ends in a tie between two or more Analysts, overtime will be determined by the traditional Tiebreakers in The General Rules and The Seeders’ Cup.

Wise Orangutan secures a first tiebreaker over Big Tuna after his Home Team Kansas City defeats Oakland.

Wise Orangutan, B-Reezy, and Atwork earn a second tiebreaker after correctly picking their Home Teams to win.

No seeder points were possible this week as Miami defeated Arizona, Detroit defeated Chicago, Green Bay defeated Seattle, and New York I defeated Dallas.

Chiefs win… Wise Orangutan moves into scoring range, but needs at least one more correct pick. Five Analysts struggle to the move the ball in the first quarter (1 Incorrect Pick), but they can score a Field Goal (2 Correct Picks) and Additional Points with the Cowboys, Patriots, or Seahawks on Sunday. Two Analysts are playing a late game and have time to script the first three Picks of their game!

Analysts will submit the remaining picks on Saturday.

Atwork: Vikings/Lions/Cowboys (Touchdown possible)

Race Day Notes

For the next 8 weeks The Bookie will ask an Analyst to reflect on your strategies and how they are working.

Our fourth muse will be from Kal Krome

Kal Krome: “Do you really want to take a Thursday game? That’s what I ask myself but the way I see it when I take a Thursday game and lose at least on Sunday I’m not worried about the scores and can do my chores and feed the horses while the sun is up.”

The Bookie: “Well, not this time Kal. New rules for the analyst that took the Raiders and lost. Each week will be a quarter of a football game. So this week is just the first quarter. You can still score a Field Goal with 2 correct picks!! There’s three more quarters left in this game. You’ll be watching football all day Sunday. The fat lady hasn’t sung yet!!”

Sunday Early Game Day Pick Results:

The Bookie: Ravens/Cowboys/Lions (Touchdown possible)
Big Tuna: Raiders/Cowboys/Patriots (Field Goal possible)
Little Tuna: Cowboys/Raiders/Seahawks (Field Goal possible)
Wise Orangutan: Chiefs/Seahawks/Lions (At least a Field Goal, 3 Points)
The Strategist: Raiders/Lions/Vikings (Field Goal, 3 Points)
Kal Krome: Seahawks/Raiders/Giants (Field Goal possible)
B-Reezy: Lions/Raiders/Patriots (Field Goal possible)
Atwork: Vikings/Lions/Cowboys (At least a Field Goal, 3 Points)

The Strategist drives for a Field Goal (3 points) with the Vikings and Lions wins, Atwork and Wise Orangutan are in Field Goal range, with their drives for Touchdowns still possible.

With the Dolphins win over the Cardinals, the Patriots will not earn additional scores. The Seahawks can now clinch their division for three additional points with a win.

With the Lions win, the Cowboys can no longer clinch a first-round bye, so they also are worth three additional points with a win.

Sunday SNF Pick Scenarios:

The Bookie: Ravens/Cowboys/Lions (Touchdown possible)
Big Tuna: Raiders/Cowboys/Patriots (Field Goal possible)
Little Tuna: Cowboys/Raiders/Seahawks
Wise Orangutan: Chiefs/Seahawks/Lions (Field Goal, 3 Points)
The Strategist: Raiders/Lions/Vikings (Field Goal, 3 Points)
Kal Krome: Seahawks/Raiders/Giants
B-Reezy: Lions/Raiders/Patriots (Field Goal possible)
Atwork: Vikings/Lions/Cowboys (At least a Field Goal, 3 Points)

After the Seahawks’ drubbing in Green Bay, Little Tuna and Kal Krome will have a scoreless first quarter as they both make two Incorrect Picks (InPs!).

Earlier in the day, The Strategist drove for a Field Goal (3 points) with the Vikings and Lions wins. Wise Orangutan’s drive stalls as the Packers sink the Hawks, so he also settles for a Field Goal (3 points).

Tonight, three Analysts pick the Cowboys to beat the Giants.

Big Tuna needs the Cowboys to win in order to get his first quarter drive going. The Bookie can move into position for a Field Goal and a second Field Goal (additional score from Cowboys division title) if the Cowboys beat the Giants.

Atwork, however, currently has the highest powered offense in the first quarter. A win by the Cowboys will net him a Touchdown drive (6 points), a two-point conversion (Vikings Win and Pick), and a Field Goal off a turnover (additional score for Cowboys division title) for a total of 11 points in the first quarter.

Learn more about our Pro Pick ‘Em Fantasy Football League from the Slate of Game for The Seeders’ Cup III.

Kal Krome: Seahawks/Raiders/Giants (Drive Fails, 0 Points)
B-Reezy: Lions/Raiders/Patriots (Field Goal possible)
Atwork: Vikings/Lions/Cowboys (Field Goal, 3 Points)

Atwork settles for a Field Goal and The Bookie’s drive stalls in Field Goal territory.

The Bookie and B-Reezy line up for a field goal kick tomorrow night, but only one can be true!

Kal Krome: Seahawks/Raiders/Giants (Drive Fails, 0 Points)
B-Reezy: Lions/Raiders/Patriots (Field Goal possible)
Atwork: Vikings/Lions/Cowboys (Field Goal, 3 Points)

ESPN reports that there are no longer any playoff scenarios for the teams tonigh: http://www.espn.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/224272/nfl-playoff-picture-giants-delay-cowboys-clinching-party.

As a result, The Bookie and B-Reezy line up to kick field goals tonight, but only one can be true!

Either way, we will have a four-way tie after the first quarter of the Playoff-Caliber Game!

Week 14 Final Pick Results:

B-Reezy: Lions/Raiders/Patriots (Field Goal, 3 Points)

Seeders Cup III | Slate of Games

The Playoff-Caliber Game

This year, The Seeders’ Cup will follow the Game of the Year Edition of the Rules in which the four week Pick Three competition will simulate a football game. Each week will be one quarter of a Playoff-Caliber Game and the Pick Threes will be regarded as offensive drives for Field Goals or Touchdowns. Review the revised point system here.

The Entrants

The Analysts have selected their Home Teams to start the third annual Seeders’ Cup. The entrants are:

Seeders Cup III | Slate of Analysts and Home Teams
Slate of Analysts and Home Teams for Seeders Cup III (2016-17)

Slate of Games

Seeders Cup III | Slate of Games
Slate of Games for the Seeders Cup III (2016-17)

The slate of games for The Seeders’ Cup III (GOTY Playoff-Caliber Game) will test the playoff-worthiness of the Analysts as the Home Teams and their opponents compete for playoff seeding.

We have three head-to-head clashes between the Analysts’ Home Teams in the first three quarters of the GOTY Playoff -Caliber Game : division rivals Raiders v. Chiefs (in the first quarter), division rivals Rams v. Seahawks (in the second quarter), and a clash of current division leaders for home field advantage, Lions v. Cowboys (in Quarter 3).

There also appear to be a few un-owned teams currently competing for playoff seeds: Patriots, Falcons, Packers, and Giants in Q1; Giants, Colts, Eagles, Buccaneers, and Titans in Q2; Packers, Colts, Steelers, and Broncos in Q3; and Eagles, Packers, and Broncos in Q4. These un-owned teams, or others as the season plays out, may be worth “seed” scores to the Analysts.

Home teams owned by an Analyst are in bold. The team at the left is the visiting team; the team at the right is the host (playing at home). There are a half dozen or more featured games, including two Thursday night games, two Sunday night games of the week (subject change), four Saturday games, and two Monday night games.

Picks

Reminder: Every Analyst has a bias for his or her Home Team and may not pick the sponsored team to lose. Analysts do not have to pick his or her Home Team to win a trifecta or to earn the “extra point” on a touchdown.

Two Correct Picks scores a Field Goal worth 3 points. Three Correct Points scores a Touchdown worth 6 points and extra points on the conversion: 1-point for a Home Team win and 2-points for a Home Team win in the Correct Pick Three.

Additional points are scored for picking teams that earn spots in the playoffs during the week. These points are regarded as special teams or defensive scores and are earned if the Analyst scores a Field Goal (2 Correct Picks) or Touchdown (3 Correct Picks) in the same wek. They are not awarded if the Analyst has only 1 Correct Pick during the week as if the offense failed to score after a great special teams play or defensive takeaway.

Email three picks to The Bookie before each leg (week) of the Race. The first picks are due Thursday, December 8, before TNF.

Rules Review | Analysts’ Strategies

The Clearinghouse

The Clearinghouse remains surprised by the influence of the Analysts on the outcome of the league.

In the beginning, Big Tuna, aka “PC,” showed the accountants how a “pick three” could be more complicated than simply picking three winners. The PC-Fecta Derby carries his name, but the Player Haters Preakness also comes from his pick strategy in the first race of the first year before the four “Crown” races existed in their current form.

We tried to make the individual Crown races the featured races of the year, but retired-Analyst, Minds Blank, elevated the stature of the Analyst of the Year Award with her superlative trash talking. The trophy races only become more prestigious after Little Tuna — who had the worst regular season of any Analyst in Season I — rode the hated New Englanders to the pinnacle of sports analysis, The Super Trifecta Bowl.

The following season, Little Tuna then showed the rest of the Analysts what it takes to ride a front-running Home Team over the course of the regular season to secure the Analyst of the Year. Her romp last year, we at The Clearinghouse freely admit amongst ourselves, worried us. Although the annual competition came down to the wire with The Strategist and her unpredictable Fishe-rams that only she could predict, after the season concluded, we wondered if the Analysts might game the Rules by riding front-runners out of the gates?

Then along comes B-Reezy to shift the strategy again this year. He has the absolute worst team in our league (if not all of professional football) and, yet, he will likely secure the Analyst of the Year Award by the 15th week of the season, if not next week. Taking a long-stride with little regard for the Crown races, B-Reezy explained in Week 5:

My strategy is different from last year where I made a lot of my picks with my home team. I’m still a number 1 Bears fan but “Straight out, my strategy is, when I feel pretty sure I go for the trifecta. I’m going for the big one, Analysts of the Year Award. I HAVE MY EYE ON THE PRIZE!!! ”

Next year, Analysts will have at least four different and proven strategies available to start the season: Big Tuna’s Crown team sprints, The Strategist’s perennial and inscrutable 8-8 team, Little Tuna’s front-runner team, and now B-Reezy’s steady trot to the finish line in the saddle of an un-bear-able team.

Anyway, this silly little competition remains far more interesting than we anticipated when negotiating terms of service with The Bookie three years ago. Just sayin’….

So, now, The Clearinghouse has another challenge for the Analysts… [more to come]

The Bookie

“If picking three correct teams is too easy we will just figure out a way to make it harder.”

Famous words from 3 years ago. Just sayin’…

The Seeders’ Cup III Preparations

New Home Team Selection Order

Three races into the season and five Analysts have Home Teams that appear to be headed to the pasture during the playoffs. A few are grumbling about swaps, and the proven Home Team champions in New England are available for an upscale….

According to the rules, the order of selection for new Home Teams is by current playoff seeding, worst to first.

The order of picks will be:

1. B-Reezy (15th NFC)
2. The Strategist (13th NFC)
3. Wise Orangutan (12th AFC)
4. Atwork (9th NFC)
5. The Bookie (7th AFC)
6. Kal Krome (2nd NFC)
7. Big Tuna (1st AFC, 10-2 Home Team record)
8. Little Tuna (1st AFC, 11-1 Home Team record)

Make your decision by the end of Monday Night Football by sending a private email to The Bookie if you wish to release your current Home Team….

Releases and New Home Team Selections

B-Reezy, Wise Orangutan, and The Bookie release their couch-bound ponies as the regular season draws to a close.

The Strategist gives her Home Team a contract extension and Atwork orders his men to row harder! The Tunas and Kal Krome like the view from the top and keep their Home Teams as well.

The three new Home Teams are:

  1. With the first pick. B-Reezy keeps it in the division and selects Detroit.
  2. With the second pick, Wise Orangutan keeps it in the division and selects Kansas City.
  3. With the third pick, The Bookie flies to Baltimore, two-time playoff winner over New England in the past 10 years.

The Clearinghouse will release the Slate of Games for the Seeders’ Cup tomorrow evening. First picks are due Thursday afternoon as Oakland travels to Kansas City for Thursday Night Football!

The rest of the field is playing for the honor of a mention in The Winners’ Circle.

Big Tuna holds onto second with 3 Trifectas and 26 Correct Picks, followed closely by Wise Orangutan (3 Trifectas and 24 Correct Picks) and Atwork (3 Trifectas and 23 Correct Picks).

Kal Krome narrowly holds onto fifth with 2 Trifecta Points and 24 Correct Picks with  The Bookie (2 Trifecta Points and 23 Correct Picks) and Little Tuna (2 Trifecta Points and 22 Correct Picks)  trailing by a 1 and 2 heads, respectively.

Little Tuna (7 points) dusts off her Analyst of the Year trophy and regains her form from last season to spring into second place down the homestretch. The Bookie (5 points) edges out Atwork (5 points) with her solid tiebreaker resume.

In fifth, Big Tuna (4 points) bests Wise Orangutan by a length (3 points).

Wise Orangutan: Chargers*/Seahawks*/Patriots
The Strategist: Rams*/Seahawks/Bears
Kal Krome: Seahawks*/Cowboys*/49ers*

Atwork: Vikings*/Seahawks*/Bears

Base trifecta is worth 5 points in the final leg of the Fibonacci Stakes.

* Denotes Fibonacci bonus picks (none possible in Leg 1).

Race Day Notes:

For the next 8 weeks I will ask each of you to reflect on your strategies and how they are working.

Our third muse will be from B-Reezy.

B-Reezy: “Hmmm. Each week I witness my lead grow stronger and the taste of near victory becomes more and more sweet, as it becomes evident that I will be crowned Analyst of the Year. An event long prophesied in the annals of fantasy lore. Your attempts at upheaval have been, at best, minuscule and they show to be ever more pathetic as the end draws nigh. Learn your hymn’s of praise for your new master, for they shall soon be warranted.”

The Results Are In!

The Bookie: Dolphins*/Cowboys/*Patriots
Big Tuna: Cowboys*/Seahawks*/Rams*
Little Tuna: Cowboys*/Seahawks*/Raiders (7 points)
Wise Orangutan: Chargers*/Seahawks*/Patriots
The Strategist: Rams*/Seahawks/Bears
Kal Krome: Seahawks*/Cowboys*/49ers*
B-Reezy: Cowboys*/Seahawks/Raiders (6 points)
Atwork: Vikings*/Seahawks*/Bears

Down the homestretch, B-Reezy finishes at a blazing gallop and distances himself from his followers. Little Tuna adeptly trails the frontrunner to notch her first trifecta of the Fibonacci.

The rest of the field stumbles on a bad trip over the unique picks designed to avoid the Box Out by B-Reezy.

** Trip: The course followed by a horse and rider during the running of a race and describes the “trouble” encountered. A horse that had a “good trip” did not encounter any unusual difficulty. A “bad trip” might involve racing wide, or being boxed in by other horses.

Mathematically speaking…

In the end, there was no way for any other Analyst to overtake B-Reezy as he scored a 6-point trifecta to add to his 3 point lead (8 points was the maximum possible in leg 5 of the Fibonacci Stakes).
