Playoff-Caliber Game Score |End of Third Quarter

Wise Orangutan scores a Touchdown (3 Correct Picks) with a two point conversion, and adds a field goal and safety for 13 points. With 22 points, he leads at the end of third quarter in the Playoff-Caliber Game (correct picks here).

Down by 6 at the end of the third quarter, Big Tuna makes a Field Goal (2 Correct Picks) to add to his first half scores for a total of 16 points.

Down by a touchdown and 2-point conversion, The Bookie, Kal Krome, and Atwork add a Field Goal (2 Correct Picks) and additional scores from the Cowboys and Steelers (Atwork only). All three have scored 14 points at the end of the third quarter.

Little Tuna also kicks a Field Goal and adds 5 points with her Home Team Dallas clinching home field advantage in the conference playoffs. She has 13 points to start the fourth quarter.

The Strategist, with 11 points total, and B-Reezy, 9 points total) are within two scores of the leader, but will need a strong fourth quarter to take the Seeders’ Cup Crown.

All 8 Analysts can win the Seeders’ Cup with a clutch drive in the fourth quarter!

Playoff-Caliber Game Tiebreakers

If the Playoff-Caliber Game ends in a tie between two or more Analysts, overtime will be determined by the traditional Tiebreakers in The General Rules and The Seeders’ Cup.

In individual match-ups, Wise Orangutan secured a first tiebreaker over Big Tuna in the first quarter and Kal Krome secured a first tiebreaker over The Strategist. In the third quarter, Little Tuna secures a first tiebreaker over B-Reezy after the Cowboys gun down the Lions.

After three quarters, Little Tuna, Big Tuna, and Wise Orangutan have tallied two Correct Home Team picks for the second tiebreaker. All but The Strategist has at least one Correct Home Team pick.

In Week 16, Dallas earned home-field advantage in the playoffs (5 points), Pittsburgh earned a division title (3 points) and Kansas City clinched a playoff birth (2 points). Ten points were the maximum additional scores, and no Analysts earned all 10 points in the third tiebreaker.

The Bookie, Wise Orangutan, Kal Krome, and Atwork lead the third tiebreaker with 8 seeder points.

Playoff Scenarios | Additional Score Potential

In The Seeders’ Cup, correct picks may award Seed Points, or “additional scoring,” if the team earns a playoff spot. The additional scores by playoff seeding are:

Clinch playoff berth (wildcard) = 2 points.
Clinch division title = 3 points.
Clinch a first-round bye in the playoffs = 4 points.

Dallas = 5 points
Seattle = 4 points
Detroit = 2 or 3 points
Green Bay 2 points
Oakland = 4 points
Kansas City = 2 points
Pittsburgh = 3 points

That is seven options, including 2 ow-owned teams, for 21 additional points. Detroit and Dallas play each other, so you can’t have it all! And you only have three picks!

Off the slate of games, New England, Houston, Miami, Atlanta, New York, and Tampa Bay may secure playoff seeding.

The Bookie and Kal Krome also came up short in the red zone when KC lost but scored two field goals with the Seattle victory for 6 points before halftime, one touchdown behind the leader.

Playoff-Caliber Game Score | End of First Quarter

A low-scoring first quarter as no Analyst drives for a Touchdown in the week (i.e., correctly picks three winners).

Wise Orangutan and Atwork appeared to be marching for a Touchdown after getting their first two picks correct, but then settled for Field Goals (2 correct picks, 3 points) to end their drives.

The Strategist and B-Reezy struggled to move the ball early when KC defeated their first pick, Oakland, but then moved down the field to score Field Goals (3 points each) at the end of the first quarter.

Four Analyst fail to score in the first quarter, including Little Tuna who did not register one first down (0 correct picks!)

No additional scores were possible as no teams clinched playoff seeding during the week. Heading into the second quarter, it is a three-point game between the Analysts.

For the next 8 weeks The Bookie will ask an Analyst to reflect on your strategies and how they are working.

Our fourth muse will be from Kal Krome

Kal Krome: “Do you really want to take a Thursday game? That’s what I ask myself but the way I see it when I take a Thursday game and lose at least on Sunday I’m not worried about the scores and can do my chores and feed the horses while the sun is up.”

The Bookie: “Well, not this time Kal. New rules for the analyst that took the Raiders and lost. Each week will be a quarter of a football game. So this week is just the first quarter. You can still score a Field Goal with 2 correct picks!! There’s three more quarters left in this game. You’ll be watching football all day Sunday. The fat lady hasn’t sung yet!!”

Tonight, three Analysts pick the Cowboys to beat the Giants.

Big Tuna needs the Cowboys to win in order to get his first quarter drive going. The Bookie can move into position for a Field Goal and a second Field Goal (additional score from Cowboys division title) if the Cowboys beat the Giants.

Atwork, however, currently has the highest powered offense in the first quarter. A win by the Cowboys will net him a Touchdown drive (6 points), a two-point conversion (Vikings Win and Pick), and a Field Goal off a turnover (additional score for Cowboys division title) for a total of 11 points in the first quarter.

Seeders Cup III | Slate of Games

The Playoff-Caliber Game

This year, The Seeders’ Cup will follow the Game of the Year Edition of the Rules in which the four week Pick Three competition will simulate a football game. Each week will be one quarter of a Playoff-Caliber Game and the Pick Threes will be regarded as offensive drives for Field Goals or Touchdowns. Review the revised point system here.

The Entrants

The Analysts have selected their Home Teams to start the third annual Seeders’ Cup. The entrants are:

Slate of Analysts and Home Teams for Seeders Cup III (2016-17)

Slate of Games

Seeders Cup III | Slate of Games
Slate of Games for the Seeders Cup III (2016-17)

The slate of games for The Seeders’ Cup III (GOTY Playoff-Caliber Game) will test the playoff-worthiness of the Analysts as the Home Teams and their opponents compete for playoff seeding.

We have three head-to-head clashes between the Analysts’ Home Teams in the first three quarters of the GOTY Playoff -Caliber Game : division rivals Raiders v. Chiefs (in the first quarter), division rivals Rams v. Seahawks (in the second quarter), and a clash of current division leaders for home field advantage, Lions v. Cowboys (in Quarter 3).

There also appear to be a few un-owned teams currently competing for playoff seeds: Patriots, Falcons, Packers, and Giants in Q1; Giants, Colts, Eagles, Buccaneers, and Titans in Q2; Packers, Colts, Steelers, and Broncos in Q3; and Eagles, Packers, and Broncos in Q4. These un-owned teams, or others as the season plays out, may be worth “seed” scores to the Analysts.

Home teams owned by an Analyst are in bold. The team at the left is the visiting team; the team at the right is the host (playing at home). There are a half dozen or more featured games, including two Thursday night games, two Sunday night games of the week (subject change), four Saturday games, and two Monday night games.

Picks

Reminder: Every Analyst has a bias for his or her Home Team and may not pick the sponsored team to lose. Analysts do not have to pick his or her Home Team to win a trifecta or to earn the “extra point” on a touchdown.

Two Correct Picks scores a Field Goal worth 3 points. Three Correct Points scores a Touchdown worth 6 points and extra points on the conversion: 1-point for a Home Team win and 2-points for a Home Team win in the Correct Pick Three.

Additional points are scored for picking teams that earn spots in the playoffs during the week. These points are regarded as special teams or defensive scores and are earned if the Analyst scores a Field Goal (2 Correct Picks) or Touchdown (3 Correct Picks) in the same wek. They are not awarded if the Analyst has only 1 Correct Pick during the week as if the offense failed to score after a great special teams play or defensive takeaway.

Email three picks to The Bookie before each leg (week) of the Race. The first picks are due Thursday, December 8, before TNF.

Final Standings

A grueling finish to the 2015-16 regular racing season as the Analysts fail to earn one trifecta in the final two legs of the Seeders’ Cup. Nobody was able to close the distance with the early leader and the winner is….

Little Tuna! On the strength of her early picks, Little Tuna wins the Cup with 11 points. In second place, after an unprecedented four trifecta winning streak that began in the Fibonacci Stakes, Kal Krome finishes second with 6 points.

The Bookie takes 3rd place after bearing down (and then downed by the Bears) to end with 5 points. In fourth place with 3 points, The Strategist experienced the agony of defeat after a missed field goal in overtime. Wise Orangutan ends in 5th place, knowing what it truly is like to be a Jets fan.

Minds Blank, Big Tuna, and B-Reezy taking a beating in the final month of the season. Based on tiebreakers, they finish 6th, 7th, and 8th, respectively.

Scenarios | Seeders Cup II (2015-16) | Leg 4

Seeders Cup Leg 4 Scenarios:

For the final leg of the Seeders Cup, all eight Analysts remain in contention. First, here are the potential seeder points for the week with a team win:

Panthers = 4 points with a win.
Cardinals = 4 points with a win and Panthers loss.
Packers or Vikings = 2 points with a win (they play each other).

Patriots = 4 points with a win.
Broncos = 3 points with a win.
Broncos = 4 points with a win and Patriots loss.
Jets = 1 point with a win.

So, 11 seeder points (12 total) can be earned with a winning trifecta if the Broncos, Patriots, and Panthers or Cardinals win. Therefore, all Analysts are technically in the race before the picks (and box outs).

In order of strength, the scenarios are:

1a. Little Tuna wins if nobody picks correctly. With a 5 point lead on the closest contender, LT needs 7 trifecta points to win outright and 6 trifecta points to force a tiebreaker with the next closet Analyst provided the Pats win. Target seeder points = 6.

1b. If the Patriots lose and Little Tuna does not earn any more points (11 total), these Analysts can win a tiebreaker over Little Tuna provided they correctly pick their Home Team to win: Kal Krome, Strategist, Bookie, and Minds Blank.

2. Kal Krome (6 trifecta points) has a chance to come from behind to win outright. If Little Tuna falters, Kal only needs 6 trifecta points to overtake LT and 5 to tie. To be certain to stay ahead the next closest contender (The Bookie – 5 points), Kal will need 12 trifecta points. Target seeder points = 5 to 11.

3. The Bookie in third place only needs 7 trifecta points to beat LT and 6 total to tie LT if she fails to gain a trifecta in the final leg. To be sure to stay ahead of the next closest contender (The Strategist – 3 points), The Bookie needs 11 trifecta points. Target seeder points = 6 to 10.

4. The Strategist needs 9 points to take the lead if the three leaders fail to earn points and 8 points to tie Little Tuna. Wise Orangutan trails with 2 points, so Strategist would need 12 points to ensure she stays ahead of the orange one. Target seeder points = 8 to 11.

5. If the four leaders falter, Wise Orangutan needs 9 points to tie Little Tuna and win the race due to the first tiebreaker (Jets beat Pats!) regardless if the Pats win this week.  To stay ahead of the final three Analysts, Wise Orangutan needs a minimum of 11 points. Target seeder points = 8 to 10.

6a. Minds Blank has an option to go for 11 points with her Home Team to tie Little Tuna (provided LT does not earn a trifecta). If the Pats win and Packers win, Minds Blank will tie Little Tuna in trifecta points and Correct Home Team Selections. The Seeders Cup will come down to the Seeder Points earned by the Analysts. If the Pats lose, Blank wins on Home Team Selections. Target seeder points = 10 points.

6b. Minds Blank, Big Tuna, and B-Reezy need 12 points to win the Seeders’ Cup outright if all other Analysts fail to earn points. In order to make 12 points, these three Analysts need the Patriots to win (4), the Broncos to win (3), and then need to pick correctly between the Panthers or Cardinals (4 points) for the NFC home field advantage. Target seeder points = 11 points.

Example: Wise Orangutan only wants to tie Little Tuna and hope that others fail to earn points. He selects Jets (1 seeder), Broncos (3 seeders), and Patriots (4 seeder points). If the three teams win, he gets 1 + 3 + 4 seeder points and 1 point for the trifecta for a total of 9 points. With 9 points in the final Leg, he ties Little Tuna with 11 points total and wins the Seeders Cup due to the Head-to-Head tiebreaker (did I mention that the Jets beat the Pats!).
