World Football Trifecta League | Football Game of the Year Edition

Horse racing is not your thing?

For non-commercial use, World Football Trifecta Leagues can model almost any sports competition using the General Rules. Dividing the regular season into five sports analysis “football games” plus a postseason bowl game is just as easy.

Below you can find an edition of the rules to model the five best football games in the year that fans will remember for years to come! Review the rule modifications for the Football Game of the Year Edition below.

Of course, every Home Team has several memorable games that make or break a season or postseason. Which will you remember: the crushing loss or the playoff victory?

The rules under review for the Game of the Year Edition of the WFTL are below…

WFTL Football Game of the Year Edition

Modifications for the General Rules

The rules are the same except for, of course, the Analysts will adopt a football team name in lieu of a thoroughbred name.  *Base* trifecta field goals (3 points) are scored with 2 Correct Picks and *base* trifecta touchdowns (6 points) are scored with 3 Correct Picks. Analysts who score *base* trifecta touchdowns then compete for *bonus* or “extra points” per the rules of the different *Football Games of the Year*. The Tiebreakers will be regarded as points scored in Overtime if two or more Analysts score the same number of trifecta points during a Game of the Year.

The four, month-long Football Games of the Year are:

  • The Statement Game (Weeks 1 to 4)
  • The Rivalry Grudge Match (Weeks 5 to 8)
  • The Overtime Game (Weeks 9 to 13)
  • The Playoff-Clincher (Weeks 14 to 17)

As in the traditional rules, the Games of the Year will determine the *bonus* point or “extra point” systems and the 3rd tiebreakers for the “overtime rules.”

The Statement Game

Rules the same as the PC-Fecta Derby, except:

Per the General Rules, 2 Correct Picks earns 3 Trifecta Points (field goal) and 3 Correct Picks earns 6 Trifecta Points (touchdown). Analysts who score touchdowns then compete for the *bonus* trifecta points: best offense earns a two-point conversion (2 Trifecta Points) and best defense earns a one-point conversion (1 Trifecta Points). An Analyst who wins both best offense and best defense is said to earn a safety plus an extra point conversion on the touchdown (3 Trifecta Points total).

The Rivalry Grudge Match

Rules the same as the Player Haters Preakness, except:

Per the General Rules, 2 Correct Picks earns 3 Trifecta Points (field goal) and 3 Correct Picks earns 6 Trifecta Points (touchdown). Analysts who score touchdowns then compete for the *bonus* trifecta points: two correct Player Hater picks earns an extra-point conversion (1 Trifecta Point) and three correct Player Hater picks earns a two-point conversion (2 Trifecta Points).

The Overtime Game

Rules the same as the Fibonacci Stakes, except:

Per the General Rules, 2 Correct Picks earns 3 Trifecta Points (field goal) and 3 Correct Picks earns 6 Trifecta Points (touchdown). The Fibonacci *bonus* or “extra points” will be applied to field goals and touchdowns.

The Fibonacci multiplier (1, 1, 2, 3, 5) applies to *bonus* trifecta points for teams picked two weeks in a row for both field goals (2 Correct Picks) and touchdowns (3 Correct Picks). Each team carried for two weeks in a row in a scoring drive (field goal or touchdown) will earn 1 “extra point” multiplied by the Fibonacci number for the “quarter” in The Overtime Game. Thus, a Fibonacci pick in week two nets 1 “extra point,” week three nets 2 “extra points,” week four nets 3 “extra points,” and week five nets 5 “extra points.” In the fifth week, then, a winning Trifecta with three Fibonacci *bonus* picks can earn 3 X 5 = 15 “extra points.”

In football parlance, when an Analyst scores more than 3 “extra points,” the Analysts will be said to have scored on special teams or defense!

The Overtime Game easily will be the highest scoring game of the year!

 The Playoff-Clincher

Rules the same as The Seeders’ Cup, except:

Per the General Rules, 2 Correct Picks earns 3 Trifecta Points (field goal) and 3 Correct Picks earns 6 Trifecta Points (touchdown). The *bonus* or “extra points” will be scored as defined in The Seeders Cup for both field goals and touchdowns. In football parlance, when an Analyst scores more than 3 “extra points,” the Analysts will be said to have scored on special teams or defense!

Analyst of the Year

Rules the same as The Analyst of the Year, except:

Per the General Rules, 2 Correct Picks earns 3 Trifecta Points (field goal) and 3 Correct Picks earns 6 Trifecta Points (touchdown). Analysts who score a touchdown with their Home Team included in the Pick Three will earn an “extra point” conversion. Analysts who score the only touchdown in the week (the only Correct Trifecta) will be awarded a two-point conversion. An Analyst who scores the only touchdown during the week with a Pick Three that includes their Home Team will be said to have scored an extra-point conversion and safety during the week (3 “extra points” in total).

Super Trifecta Bowl

Rules will be modified at a future date.

League Management

League management will substitute The League Office for The Clearinghouse, The Commissioner for The Bookie, and The Referee for the Enforcer. All responsibilities remain the same.

An Example of the Statement Game of the Year

In the past year, if our own league had scored Season III of PC-Fecta Derby as The Statement Game of the Year, the outcome would not have changed but the scoring would have modeled a football game. We will focus on the top scorers.

In the first quarter, five of eight Analysts scored touchdowns, but three failed to make the conversion. Kal Krome kicked the extra point to score 7 points while Big Tuna went for the two-point conversion to take the early lead.

In the second quarter, The Strategist earned the sole trifecta, so she scored a safety and touchdown with an extra point to take the lead. Big Tuna and Kal Krome, however, scored a field goal to stay within 2 points of the leader.

In the third quarter, Kal Krome scored a second touchdown and added a two-point conversion for 18 points total. The Strategist kicked a field goal to remain with 3 points of her opponent. Big Tuna kicked a field goal to keep the deficit to 4 points.

Heading into the fourth quarter, five Analysts were within a touchdown and extra points of the leader, Kal Krome. Kal Krome scored only a field goal in the final quarter to finish with 21 points.

None of the other Analysts, including The Strategist and Big Tuna,  proved to be clutch in the closing minutes and failed to score the go ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Kal Krome won as he did in the traditional scoring system for the PC-Fecta Derby.
